With most other social media platforms, there are tools and analytics in place so that you can track the performance of your posts. You can see how many “likes” your Facebook post received, how many “retweets” your Twitter post received, and how many times your YouTube video was viewed. These are quantitative measures of your social media marketing. You get actual numbers to compare your performance over time.
And if you wanted to check on how your Facebook post did three years ago, you can dive into your Facebook history, find that post, and still bring up the numbers. This is sadly not the case with Snapchat, even though it has quickly become the social media darling for people looking to reach the elusive millennial generation. Snapchat is inherently ethereal in nature, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some insight into how you’re doing.
Did you know that you can not only see how many times your Snapchat picture or video was seen, but also who actually viewed it? This is built right into the Snapchat app itself and is surprisingly easy to access.
1. Swipe from the Right
After opening the Snapchat app, you’ll be shown the main screen for snapping your own picture by default. Swipe in from the right to access the list of “stories” that you and your friends have posted, as well as the promoted content.
If you’ve been using Snapchat for any length of time, you’ve likely discovered this page long ago. Snapchat isn’t just for private messaging, after all.
2. Tap the Three Dots
Looking toward the top of this screen, you’ll find “My Story.” As you’ve likely figured out, this is where all the posts from your story will appear. Remember that all Snapchat posts disappear from your story after 24 hours, so you can only access posts from the last 24 hours. If you want to check your stats, you will need to do it daily.
When you tap on the three vertical dots top the right of “My Story,” you’ll expand your story out so you can see your individual posts. This is important, because your stats are being tracked on a per-post basis and not from your story as a whole. This is because your story is inherently dynamic, encapsulating the last 24 hours.
3. Tap the “Eyeball” Icon
Next to each post in your story, assuming that at least one person has viewed that post, you’ll see a number followed by an “eyeball” icon. The number indicates how many people have viewed that post. If you tap on the “eyeball” icon, though, you’ll reveal a new page.
This new page will list all the names (or usernames) of the individual Snapchat users who have viewed that specific post. This can be incredibly powerful from a marketing perspective, because you’ll start to notice over time which users tend to view more content and also which users are interested in what content.
4. Check the Snapchat Post Too
If the above steps don’t quite work for you, you can also access the same list of people who viewed your snap by looking at the actual snap itself.
When reviewing the individual post in your story, look toward the bottom of the screen. The “eyeball” icon is there too and tapping on it reveals the same list. This is also where you can tap the “down” icon to download your Snapchat post to your mobile device.
At this point, as popular and as buzzworthy as Snapchat has become, it’s still questionable how much you’re getting out of using Snapchat. Staying on top of the platform can be time-consuming and tracking those stats every day can be even more time-consuming, since it’s not archived for later review. Even so, it’s good to know that at least something is there.
